17th Annual Hoppin' John Fiddlers' Convention
Yes, friends – it’s time for a contest revival! Band and instrument contests are historically at the heart of every fiddlers convention, but we’ve seen a noticeable decline in participant numbers in recent years – both at Hoppin’ John and at other events around the region. Maybe some folks say that they don’t want to compete against their friends. Or maybe you think that contests are only for amateurs. To both of these points, I would say that it just doesn’t have to be that serious! The contests are about providing entertainment and having fun with your friends. When both novice and professional players compete on the same level, it adds extra enjoyment and entertainment for everyone, especially the audience. You won’t be buying a new car with Hoppin’ John prize money, but you can pay for your travel or take your friends out to dinner with your winnings. You could even donate it back to the Shakori Hills nonprofit. Registration is now open!
Spring Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance

Singing Fearlessly
Are you ready to sing fearlessly?
Sing Fearlessly. Sing with Freedom. Sing Joyously.
How to do this? Join our 6 week adult-only class. Learn to love your voice – your very own unique instrument.
The wonderful Marie Vanderbeck will be teaching another Sing Fearlessly Class on Tuesdays from 6PM – 8:00PM Jan 23 – February 27 in downtown Pittsboro, North Carolina.
We’ll learn breath control, phrasing, vocal exercises, increasing your range, tongue twisters, trills, how to sing the “truth” and more. We’ll also work on strengthening and relaxing your voice for its optimal impact.
If you’ve always wanted to sing with more confidence or want to improve your skills, then this is the class for you. Each class will build on the previous one so you’re never out of step.
This is a fun, active class where we’ll explore individual as well as group techniques. This is a “no-judgment, safe environment” so be prepared to bring songs to share with the group.
This 6 week class is FREE and open to the public, but donations to Shakori Hills Community Arts Center are appreciated. To Register or for additional information about the class, email info@shakorihills.org.
